Maintaining a Ford Capri

If you’re fortunate enough to own a classic car like a Ford Capri you obviously wish to maintain its stunning elegance. There are a number of tried and tested ways to do this at home, but it is important that you regularly take your Ford Capri to a reliable dealer like Evans Halshaw for regular maintenance, tune ups and any repairs.

Firstly, create a detailed maintenance schedule and stick to it! Naturally, it makes sense to seek expert advice when drawing up your maintenance plan. A specialist dealer can advise you on what you can do at home and what should only be done in their garage.

Invest in a custom-fitted cover that will fully protect your Capri from garage dust and the elements. This will help the paint last longer. It will also reduce the amount of cleaning needed, but it’s important you still show your classic Ford regular loving care and attention with a shammy.

The Capri’s brake system is reasonably complex. The front discs and brake pads and the rear drums, cylinders and shoes should be thoroughly checked every year or 3000 miles. It’s important that you seek specialist advice from a reliable dealer like Evans Halshaw if you lack the knowledge to properly assess the condition of the brake system.

Every year or 3000 miles the fuel and cooling systems must also be thoroughly examined. The fuel system’s petrol pump should be checked for leaks, while the paper air filter element must be replaced every 6000 to 12000 miles depending on dirt levels. The cooling system should be cared for all year round by using high quality anti-freeze.

Your Ford’s engine should be degreased and cleaned regularly with suitable cleaning solutions and a specialised brush. Be sure to dry the engine after cleaning before applying protectants and wax. To preserve your engine properly the oil and filter must be renewed every year or 3000 miles. Clean lubricant is essential to prevent blockages in the camshaft feed system.

Be sure to lubricate your gearbox every 6000 miles with suitable high quality gear oil. Again, if you are unsure of which lubricants and oils to use simply ask the advice of a dealer who will normally be glad to help.

Keep to your maintenance schedule, regularly clean and vacuum and you’ll be on the road to maintaining your Ford Capri in all its glory.
