oil leak at rear wheel.

Post by ocj »

Hi gang,

Well the mk3 is nearly on the road at long last, but while i was changing the rear brake pads over the weekend i noticed that the back passenger side pads where covered in oil. it's not the cylinder so is the an oil seal behind the hub, behind that plate thats held in with 4 bolts?
I've no idea, so i thought i better ask you guys before i start pulling bit off.
Thanks
ocj

Get your self a new wheel bearing - the seal is part of it.

Check that the axle breather is clear.

Thanks csr for the quick reply.
So the bearing and seal are all the one.
I'll get that sorted. Can you tell me if the bearing needs to be put in with a press or could i just do it myself?
Oh and the axle breather, where exactly is that?
sorry for the q's but i'm still new to this capri.
Thanks

you can do the bearings yourself, but take care when cutting the old inner race off,
you will need a hefty bit of long pipe to use as a slide hammer for knocking the bearing on,
I had mine done by caprisport as they do this with the eyes closed (done so many)
the axle breather is on the top of one of the axle tubes between the diff and the wheel. it is a plastic breather

I'll do that,
I'll have to see if the local auto factors can get me a bearing.
I'll check that breather out to.You learn something new everyday.
