mk3 swap with mk1

hello,
i was wondering if you could swap the rear light cluster of a mk3 for a mk1????
i am not a big fan of the light cluster at the rear of a mk3 but i like a mk1 light cluster!!!
would i need to cut it and fabricate it to fit????
