Idle

Hi all, Recently my 2.0 has been running worse to the point it won't idle 90 % of the time and then it does unexpectedly. I've tried setting carb up as per weber instructions and the haynes. I have just had it in bits to check jets etc, put it all back and now its even worse. You put your foot down but it wont sustain the revs. It just gradually dies. I've got an old vv in the shed. I know the're crap but will it run ok on the 2.0? Any ideas what could be the problem
Why won't it just sodding work? There is always something!!!
Thanks in advance, a very disheartened danny :(

It must be cos its been doin over 100 miles a day, a lot of it motorway. Very embaressing stuck in traffic as its a couple of minutes before it'll start again if you stall it. Have sit there reving it like a t**t to keep it going.

squirt around the carb with carb cleaner, *(not the top) and see if revs pick up etc if so you have an air leak,

V.good point. I'll check that tommorow. I've got a mate on the lookout for another weber. Do you think the VV will work till i can get it sorted? :?

i would of done the compression test first if it was me mate,
then you know that side was ok and a top end strip down was not needed.

Cant find compression tester. Have checked clearances and the exhaust onesare way off. Put it back together and its miles better although no3 isnt firing at all. Its getting a spark so cant figure it out.

All of the haynes fault finding stuff was pointing to the head gasket. Finally replaced it (had to drill two bolts out :x ) and she runs swet as a nut with the VV fitted. You could see where the gasket had gone as it had rusted one of the bolts into the block although a bit of brute force and ignorance sorted that.
So while i had her running like new i thought, why not put a weber 38 on it......the saga continues...although if it wont go i'll just put the VV back on!
