3 litre Essex Exhaust size?

Hi all,
I've got a 3 litre Essex in a Landrover, the exhaust is a custom job bodged up by a PO. The current exhaust we have is a single exhaust at the rear, joined before the middle box. Not sure on the exact diameter without measuring it, though it is thin, and I'm sure is less than 2".
My question is, what diameter was the exhaust on a Capri with a V6?
Also what effect on the engine does it have when the exhaust gases are restricted? Overheating for one?
