Inline 6 in a mk1??!!

Post by dopplershift »

This is my first time on here so hi everyone! :D

Ok, I'm looking at doing up a '69 mk1 thats currently in really bad shape.

Eventually, when I get to the engine, I was thinking of trying a Toyota 7M-GTE inline 6.

I've read that some people think the mk1's engine bay is too small for a straight 6, so I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried to fit one? Any straight 6's at all?

Apart from actually trying it, is there any way to tell if it will fit?

Cheers

The problem with the Mk 1 and 2 for that matter is the lack of depth
of the front valance.
Would think the engine will be ok but you will have to pick the radiator with the height restriction in mind.

Think about the sump arrangement too.

Awesome! Thats the first even vaguely positive reply I've had on the idea.

I take it by 'ok' you mean that it should work, with a fair bit of effort and creative redistribution of parts?

I dont quite know what you mean about the sump... I'd guess your talking road clearance? Would it just be a matter of getting a shallower/custom shaped oil pan? Or did you mean moving the whole lot?

Thanks again

The sump comment is about where the drop is.

You need a rear drop sump for the Capri - I don't know if the engine you
want to use is the same or front drop.

Something else that comes to mind is the size of the gearbox.
I got hold of the bomb proof Supra Turbo box with a view to using the Lexus 4 litre V8. It's a bit large to say the least.
You could well have work to do, to make the gearbox fit.

Which supra box was that? The R154?

I'm thinking of using a W58... although it may not last long, I cant afford a 154 or V160 straight off the bat.

It does sound like a tight fit into a capri... people talk of persuading the box into the tunnel using a sledgehammer!

I think the W58 is a fair bit smaller than the 154 or 160, and hopefully it will hold up to the ~250hp I intend to give it.

i agree the 154 is a huge box, but very bullet proof,
i got hold of one to go in my capri but realised it was going to be more hassle than i wanted,
its now been sold on, i too was told to use the w58, but you try finding one
my mate has one in his v8 tina which is nearly 300bhp and he races his and launches real hard, i mean REAL hard :o  , and has no probs with the w58 at all.

Thanks Guys,

Thats reassuring hearing about the W58's robustness.... I had heard that it might be able to handle the hp, but I was a bit worried that its only rated for 230 or so I think. Thanks v8!

As to the R154 csr, I would happily pick it up for that price, except: I'm in Australia. I'll have a look at shipping prices and get back to you.

Cheers guys :D

7M's are a good motor but are getting old and WILL pop head gasket if you even look at a track, best bet is to use a 1j or 2jz. 2j's are very expensive, go for a 1j. I am not kidding, I know of 5 1j's that make well over 500bhp on stock internals. 1j+ fuel system + good ECU = a world of fun. Don't worry about the lack of 500cc, and if it does not fit, make it.

Over in perth there is a nissan 6 in a Mk1 his next step as far as i know is he is putting the turbo on now that the engine has been fitted and driven it is tight but all fits the ECU and computor bits are in the cabin not sure what gear box he has but all came out of a VL Commodore best bet to buy a front cut so you get everything with it i do know he had to do a lot of cutting i would go the same way as jamesB with the other engine still a tight sqeeze , there is a yellow one on a web page
http://www.capriclinic.com/conditions.php
