How'd,

I have a quick question,
I've been driving the capri a bit now in this lovely weather.
and i've noticed a leak at the back of the gearbox were the prop shaft goes in.
Does anyone know if there is a rubber seal or is it a bearing and seal in there?
Looks like it's a big job?

any help would be good thanks.

Far as I know,it's just a seal at the end where the prop goes into the gear box. Not a too big a job really. Jack the car up, put a container on the floor under the end of the gearbox, just to catch any oil that comes out. Take the prop off, then prise out the oil seal and fit a new one. Then put back together and replace any oil thats come out

Thanks IanD,
You make sound so easy i'll just have to give it a go.
I'd say the gearbox has never been changed s that'l be nice and clean. :(

Thats ok mate,np  make sure you get the right gearbox oil, if it's a 4 speed gearbox it's ep80 I think, where as 5 speed uses a synthetic or semi synthetic oil  . You might want to losen off the prop shaft to axle bolts before you jack the rear end up of the car too, unless your gonna put the rear end on ramps, which would be better, cos the gearbox oil will run to the front of the gearbox and let you work on the prop, with no probs ;)

It's always been assumed that Ford 5 speed oil is in fact a type of auto transmission fluid.

Nobody really knows but the fact you run it without problems, kind of suggests it's ok.

Lots of vehicles now use Dexron 3 in transfere cases and thats just gears and chains. Think the 6 speed on our Z28 uses Dexron 3 too.
