2.8i lsd in need of advice!

Post by duggan »

My diff has always had a bit of a whine and the day before i was getting round to take a look i drove round a few roundabouts to have a listen. To my horror the bloody thing seemed to seize!
The only way to describe it is that it felt like someone had pulled on the back of the car and it slowed down. This happened just as i started to straighten up and lasted for about 10 seconds.

I've jacked up the car and turned one wheel while the other is being held. It turned smoothly but stiffly and i could'nt hear any noise. I then removed the cover and checked for any damage to the crown wheel or pinion but they seem ok. The wear on the teeth of the crown seems to be nearer the outside of the teeth but some don't have any wear on them at all. Checked Mr Haynes and it says that wear on the outside means the pinion needs to be moved towards the crownwheel and the crown nearer to the pinion.

To cut my babbling short have i done the right checks and is it big job to fix?
Think i need to change the oil aswell as you can see in the pictures!!!!!!
What can i use to give it all a good clean. Brake cleaner?
Any help or comments would be much apprieciated.
Thanks.
Sorry about the babbling.
